same for me to.....DDos attack? - seems much faster now though.

I don't think it was a Denial of Service attack, unusual, but who knows.

I think one of my gags was just too awful for the server and it fell over.

A bit of google searching reveals that this is a common problem.

..although I've stopped smoking now....it was a bit like looking for a match when you were about to light up.....

I seriously doubt it was a DDOS! That implies a conspiracy or something, and it's not like the disruption of this site (for the time it takes a sysadmin to remedy at least) would cause any notable financial harm/ loss to user base/ ransom potential/ silencing of media. Why would anyone go to such lengths and for what gain?
If this site were down, I'd quite happily waste a number of hours on slashdot/ redtube (not safe for work!)/ various networking sites. Get a good bookmarks/favs list! Come back to a site when it's good.
