But if they wanted to save it, they wouldn't have cut, would they?

I think they actually want to save the stock market. No idea if they can or not, nor do I care since we are in cash (various currencies) and a bit of the gold stuff (just for you cgnao, just for you). biggrin.gif

They dont care about a tanking dollar.

A weak dollar will make the euro and the pound completely uncompetitive, they know what they are doing and are doing it well!

A weaker Dollar also makes US Treasuries unattractive which means the Fed will be unable to finance the budget deficit. It also means the US has to export more goods to be able to pay for the same amount of imported goods. As the US is a net importer, that must spell disaster in the long run

Surely not the best idea in a credit crunch when they need external investment?

Cgnao me old chum.

They WANT the dollar to tank!!

alongside the collapse in consumer spending and the resultant job losses for this sector, they want a counterweight.

By shattering the buying power of the dollar, they can re-ignite the export sector because US manufacture/services that foreigners want become cheaper in relative terms.

as the economy as a whole rebalances,it's cool. Its only domestic consumption and related industries that taste the pain....some of which is padded out by extra hiring from the exporters.

The big fly in the ointment is business investment, there ain't been too much of that in the US.As other countries catch up,you might well see capital flight from the stockmarket, which will do FAR more damage.

if only we could do the same!

That is true to a certain extent, however that can only kind of work if the dollar is devalued and stays permanently low, but after a while the advantage of the devaluation will wear off.

If they were to lower the dollar an attempt to get rid of the competition and then raise its value again then what would happen was that US companies would become inefficient because it would be easy to make a dollar profit, and the companies in other countries would become more efficient to keep their markets. If the dollar were to revert to say €1=$1 then it would be even more bloated US industry vs more efficient Euro industry.

This is the easy way out.

For now.

They just do not give a toss about the future.

When I say they want to save the dollar I mean save the international dollar-based monetary system.

The writing is on the wall.

It's going to be very ugly.

Protect yourselves.

100% correct, guaranteed.
