I don't know if I'm allowed to link to this but there is something fascinating in here. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it reminds me of a passage describing the emergence of a nascent superintelligence from a cluster of independent agents in a novel by Vernor Vinge (A Fire Upon the Deep).
