Quite a lot of it was due to good performances in Wall Street

Its been inflating nicely for a good few days, atleast a week of constant rises, yesterday it dipped (expectedly) and now its carrying on. I get a sense of unsustainability from it.

Makes no odds to me, ill lose money no matter what way it goes .

Pund now down to 1.733 per dollar.. dropped another cent. And Diesel round here is up to 92 pence a litre.... That cant be good for inflation or IR drops... Just when the serial borrowers need a cut. Inflation report is out soon is it not? And surely the BOEs remit is only to control inflation and not retail spening?

Anyone else agree?

Interesting comment I read somewhere today(can't remember where!) describing the BOE as Janus (looking in both directions for the next IR move) and the European bank as a Hydra (looking at everywhere else)

Airrifle best - where are you going to get replacement cartridges from? And an air rifle is quiet - ideal for getting that scrawny woodpigeon, roasting it on a fire made from someones furniture then starting a new religion worshipping the sun.
Jenny Agutter then appears and.... oh it was all a dream!

DOW up 1.50%, NASDAQ UP 1.77%. How do you explain that? They didn't suffer the falls that we did yesterday. Sounds like there's some inflationary pressure in the global economy.

How strange. I've ordered today £720 worth of rifle and air charging gear in preparation for our impending meltdown. I so feel it is going to end up like the US depression such that part of my survival kit includes a shooter. I don't eat a great deal of meat but when there is none in the shops!! I have spent most of the afternoon tending to my veg plot and I have some very nice Strawberries coming along.

At least I have not bought a 5 ton digger for the bunker, yet.

Cash is king.

Springer for me - no charging gear required ;-).

Not in pounds it ain't, currently dropping faster than the proverbial barmaids pants.

Over the last 3 months againt the dollar you're down 12%, againt the brizilian real in 12 months you're down 50%.

Dicky,

Imagine being a foreign purchaser of off-plan UK investment property last year!

Could be a large amount of currency hedging going on, further pushing the price down the fall has been relentless and quicker than the fall of the $.

Check out this chart.

Personally, I've got night vision gear, snipers rifle, camo etc stashed in the woods.

Can't tell you where/how I got it, otherwise I'd have to shoot you with it.

The last time the markets bucked the trend in strange circumstances, was it not followed by the infamous Black Monday. tongue.gif

Bubble Pricker
The FTSE bounce does not surprise me. In fact, yesterday morning, I was frantically on the phone and web trying to buy the FTSE after it dropped to 5030. Unfortunately, I could not get through to my broker until it had already bounced back to 5080. I still have made a tidy profit selling this morning (should have held out longer now I suppose).

The fall yesterday was totally exaggerated and unjustified. I was totally sure the market would bounce back. Still I only used play money yesterday, because ultimately I did not have the guts, so only made a few quid. Anyone with the guts could have made almost 2k between yesterday and today by just trading one September future contract.

theChuz, your stock picking is great (CNM), your timing is lousy (buying at peaks). wink.gif

Suggest you buy "One up on Wall Street" by Peter Lynch, read it twice over, and meditate. Pick good companies, but don't overpay for them. Actually, CNM looks a great buy now at 153p.

Went short on august crude today. Nicely in profit when the markets closed. Lots of worry about hurricane Dennis, but if it blows over without damage, we could see oil back in the mid $50's and the markets advancing yet further.
Van
It's a sad and ironic fact that people won't really consider shares until the market has advanced past the last peak. That is why I think it's quite possible that if the FTSE goes past 6900 in the next few years, it will attract dumb money and push on towards 10,000 or more a few years after that, with the Dow advancing towards 15,000+. This may sound crazy, but IMHO it is not just possible, but very likely within the next 7 years.

The good news short term: S&P/Dow look set for further gains, which should pull the FTSE higher. I think US stocks are due a significant rally back to test their year-highs, as Fed rates probably only have another 0.25% rise this year IMHO. And oil price falls could give it added impotence. Equity markets currently climbing that wall of worry...

Err no expert but it is an S410, standard one but good by all accounts. We want to do FT only but it might come in handy if all goes 'pear shaped'!!

What is tragic for a lot of people is that there is a huge amount of money invested by Joe Public in With Profit pensions. At the bottom of the market, the pension companies ditched equities completely in the With Profit policies so that a huge number of policy holders have not only suffered the crash but to rub salt into the wound have now missed out of all the rises in the FTSE. By the time the pension companies pile back into the FTSE it will probably be at its peak and due for another downturn.

Standard Life tried to be smart and stay in equities even after the crash but then there was the second downturn because of the Iraq war and Standard Life got their knuckles wrapped - but with hindsight it was always the right thing to do - stay with equities at the bottom of the market. Mind you that is only any good for investors who can stick with it long term.

Its just CNM that has me and i dont know why, i think its because i see some decent potential in it then when ever there is a rally i think it will break its usual upper resistance level "it will be differnt this time" ha, every time it has me and every time i think "doh!".

Hello mate - I've noticed you've been saying the same thing for a few years now. I was wondering why you had those opinions.. and how you feel about them now, over 2 years on.
